Dear ALI Members,

I am excited to once again work with the American Ladder Institute to further your mission of developing ladder safety resources. Many enhancements have been made since my earlier time with ALI, primarily National Ladder Safety Month which has gained
incredible exposure going into its 6th year. Congrats to each of you who not only provide financial sponsorship of NLSM but also contribute your expertise and knowledge.

Attending the Fall Conference at Caesar’s Palace in Vegas was a great way to transition the Executive Director role from Pam O’Brien to myself. Please join me in thanking Pam for her effort and leadership these past 3 years, and wishing her well. For
those who may not have been involved, I served as ALI Executive Director from 2007 – 2012, during which time the original Ladder Safety Training videos were developed; now those resources are getting a facelift to remain relevant and timely.

Please continue to spread the word about the value of ALI and National Ladder Safety Month in March, 2022. And thank you for your contribution to the work of standards development and ALI’s role to promote ladder safety.

All the best,

Structure in the Midwest Utilizes Strongwell's Industrial Ladder System

Strongwell's Chiller Support Frame and Platform proved invaluable for Advantic's midwest manufacturing facility. The specific project required a lightweight, corrosion-resistant structure, and the two companies collaborated on design to ensure needs were
met. Since installation in 2018, Strongwell has received feedback from Advantic that the design and product have outperformed expectations in terms of "ease of installation, corrosion resistance and overall performance." To read more about the project,

Member Company Spotlight: Batavia Services, Inc.

Batavia Services was started by a man with a vision, who saw the essential need to maintain ladder equipment to ensure the product's safe use. The importance of making sure ladders operate properly was quickly recognized as a major step in reducing accidents
and fatalities, benefitting the technology and the industry. The company worked hard to develop a system of maintenance and repair techniques with the support of ladder manufacturers and telecom engineering and research professionals. Today, Batavia
operates in all 48 contiguous states and Hawaii, with over 60 representative teams. To learn more about the company and its commitment to safety, click here.

OSHA Issues Corrections to Standards

OSHA has issued corrections for its Walking-Working Surfaces, Personal Protective Equipment and Special Industries standards to remove "typographical, formatting and clerical errors," publishing a final rule in the Dec. 17 Federal Register. Corrections related to Ladders, 1910.23(d)(4): The previous rule required that "the side rails of through or side-step ladders extend 42 inches above the top of an access level or landing platform served by the ladder." The agency has added the words "at least" before "42 inches."
OSHA Celebrates 50-Year Anniversary

Throughout the past five decades, OSHA's workplace focus areas have changed, but its mission has always remained the same -- ensure safe workplaces across the board. In its 50-year recap, OSHA highlights its fall prevention campaign as a key initiative launched in the 2010s. OSHA states that falls are the number one cause of worker fatalities in the construction industry. American Ladder Institute and National Ladder Safety Month work at decreasing these numbers and ensuring workers and homeowners alike are safe on ladders.

Chicago, February 20, 2020 — American Ladder Institute’s fourth annual National Ladder Safety Month will focus on five key themes that play an invaluable role in ensuring ladder safety at work and in the home. Starting this Monday, February 23, National Ladder Safety Month will emphasize ladder safety through a variety of channels. To play a part in decreasing ladder injuries and fatalities worldwide, join the conversation on social media using #LadderSafetyMonth, taking advantage of American Ladder Institute’s free Ladder Safety Training, accessing the official marketing guide, and downloading and sharing National Ladder Safety Month flyers and videos. Everyone, from large organizations to the everyday user, can participate.

From February 23 – 29, National Ladder Safety Month will focus on the question “What Is Ladder Safety?” and include key tips on proper ladder selection, inspection, use, maintenance, and disposal.

Main Ladder Safety Tips:

Three points of contact: Always maintain three points of contact when using a ladder. Keep either two feet and one hand or one foot and two hands on the ladder as you are descending or ascending. When working, in addition to your having both feet supported on a step or rung, brace yourself into the ladder.

Climb slowly: Climbing slowly and deliberately ensures you don’t make any sudden movements that could contribute to a fall.

Maintain a center of gravity: Keep the center of your belt buckle/stomach between the ladder’s side rails when climbing and working. Do not overreach.

Pay attention throughout the entire climb: Devote your full attention to the climb and descent until you are safely off the ladder. Simple mistakes and oversight can have severe consequences.

More Ways to Participate:

Ladders are one of the most common and useful household tools, but used incorrectly, can be one of the most dangerous. Get involved with National Ladder Safety Month to help spread the word on safe ladder use to your family, friends and colleagues.

Staying Safe During Holiday Decorating: What You Need to Know

It's the holiday season, full of festivities, holiday cheer and decorations. But before you tackle any holiday projects, follow the tips below to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

Never climb a ladder in inclement weather. This includes snow, wind and rain. For those who live in wintry climates, this can be a challenge -- but it is necessary to preventing ladder accidents. Wear slip-resistant shoes when you climb, even if there isn't rainfall.

Choose the right-sized ladder for the job. If you will be decorating your roof or other tall surfaces, be sure the ladder is long enough so you can safely reach without stepping on the top two rungs. For more information about choosing the right-sized ladder, click here.

Inspect your equipment before climbing. Be sure your ladder isn't rusted or defective in any way prior to climbing. Most people only use their ladders a couple times a year, so it is crucial to make sure it is in proper working condition prior to climbing.

Save the eggnog and any other holiday spirits until decorating is complete. Any amount of alcohol can impair your balance and judgement — two things that are vital to ladder safety.

Position your ladder on firm, level ground. You can also use leg levelers to ensure stability.

Always maintain three points of contact while climbing. This means, at all times, either two hands and one foot are touching the ladder, or two feet and one hand.

Do not overreach while on the ladder. If you need to stretch to reach something, it is safest to climb down and move the ladder closer. Overreaching is a leading cause of ladder injuries according to the 2019 ALI Citation Survey, and one of the most dangerous. Remember, taking additional time to decorate and be cautious is worth your safety!

ALI hopes each of you has a safe and joyful holiday season!

The Importance — and Necessity — of Using Current Technical Standards

Staying up-to-date on the latest technical standards for the equipment used by your employees is imperative for workplace safety. Across industries, injuries are far too common and, unfortunately, fatalities do occur. While purchasing updated standards does come at a cost, in the long-term, ignoring the guidelines in these standards not only costs you money in worker’s compensation, higher insurance and potential lawsuits, but also implies a disregard for employee safety that can (and should) deter top talent and turn away future customers.

As the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved developer of safety standards for the ladder industry, American Ladder Institute (ALI) reviews and updates the A14 Standards on ladder safety every 5 years. The Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) A14 assumes the responsibility for developing the Standards, which govern design, construction, testing, selection, care, and safe use of ladders. Nine standards are currently in publication by the A14 Committee, and sold to manufacturers, contractors, governmental agencies and those in the legal profession. Subcommittees are in place for each standard and are comprised of subject matter experts. Standards are reviewed, revised, re-approved, discarded, or added as part of a 5-year cycle.

Why are the Standards reviewed and updated so often?

The industry is constantly evolving, and the standards on which we govern safety need to evolve as well. Re-evaluating standards on a 5-year cycle ensures that each one is not outdated, no longer applicable or simply obsolete, and promotes discussion on the implementation of new standards that are applicable. Using standards that fall into the categories of outdated, irrelevant or obsolete is not only an ineffective way to operate, but also more importantly, puts lives at risk. Making sure your company uses the most up-to-date standards is crucial to ensuring the safety of employees and customers.

ALI offers these standards for purchase:

Stepstools – 2018

Be sure to check the standards you are currently using and verify that they are the latest version. Don’t forget to regularly check the standards listings to see if updated versions are available, and discard outdated copies.
